Sister Cecilia Moshe Hanna (1931–2002) was an Iraqi Chaldean Catholic nun from the Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, remembered for her steadfast faith amidst violence. Orphaned at age 5, she was raised in a monastery and later took religious vows, serving her community with a joyful and humble spirit. Known for her constant smile and kindness, Sr. Cecilia treated everyone as family. During a turbulent time in northern Iraq, her convent relocated multiple times for safety – from Araden to Mosul to Baghdad. At age 71, on August 15 (a day honoring the Virgin Mary), Sr. Cecilia was alone in her Baghdad convent when armed extremists broke in. Even as they robbed the chapel, she told the intruders she forgave them and would pray for God to forgive them too. In a final act of hatred, the attackers brutally stabbed and beheaded her, making her a martyr of charity and forgiveness. Sr. Cecilia’s cause for beatification has begun, and she stands as an inspiration to Christians to remain faithful and loving, even unto death, echoing Christ’s words of mercy on the Cross.
(When confronted by her killers:) “I forgive you, and I will ask the Lord to forgive you as well.” – Sr. Cecilia’s final witness of mercy (as recounted by those who learned of her martyrdom)
