Biography

St. Gregory of Narek (c. 950–1003) was a 10th-century Armenian monk, priest, mystical poet, and theologian, honored as a saint in both the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic traditions. He lived at the Monastery of Narek (in present-day Turkey), where he composed his masterpiece, the Book of Lamentations (also called Narek), a collection of 95 prayers in poetic form. These prayers express profound contrition, humility, and intimacy with God, earning Gregory recognition as one of Armenia’s greatest literary figures. For centuries, Armenians have cherished his Book of Lamentations as a guide in times of trial or illness, believing its supplications have healing power. St. Gregory’s spirituality centered on seeking God’s mercy and a mystical union with Him through constant prayer. In 2015, Pope Francis declared Gregory of Narek a Doctor of the Church, calling him “Doctor of Peace”, for his writings transcend time and ecclesial divides with their depth and beauty. This made Gregory uniquely a Doctor of the Church despite having lived in an oriental Orthodox context. Today, a statue of St. Gregory stands in the Vatican Gardens as a symbol of Christian East and West. His life and works continue to inspire prayerful devotion and efforts toward Christian unity.
